Everything you need to know about the new RSV vaccine!
2 Min ReadRSV (or Respiratory syncytial virus) is an infectious disease of the airways and lungs. It usually gets better by itself and is mild for most people, but it can be serious for some babies and older adults. Almost everyone will have RSV at some point in their life. Symptoms of RSV include:
- cough
- sore throat
- sneezing
- a runny or blocked nose
It can also make you become wheezy or short of breath and lead to pneumonia and other life-threatening conditions.
The UK will become the first country in the world to have a national programme that uses the same vaccine to protect both newborns and older adults against RSV. The vaccine is being offered to those 75-79 and pregnant women. From 2025 the vaccine will then be offered to patients as they turn 75. Only one dose is needed and will boost your protection. We are able to offer the vaccine from 01st September and have started to invite patients who are eligible.
Pregnant women will be offered their vaccine by their midwife, however we are able to provide it at the surgery if a patient requests it.
